About the Artist:

Tessa Clegg (b. 1941) is one of Britain’s most important glass artists and is known for her unique cast and pâte de verre sculptures. CLegg and Crowley (b.1955) met at the Stourbridge College of Art and collaborated on a series of works including figurative symbols during the 1980s.

Their ‘Storyteller’ vessels cross diverse cultures across history and can be seen to reference Pop culture and the underground gay club scene of the 1980s. Although clearly vessels. they are also works of art as they tell a story and record a moment in time. much like Grayson Perry’s ceramics. Each is unique.

This example. executed in a stone-like mottled grey glass includes toy soldiers. pistols. and a shooting star. the legs. arms. and torso from a 1980s HeMan action figure. flowers. the letters J/e and a large female Thai dancer.

Other examples from the series are held in the collection of the National Museums Scotland. Other works by Clegg can be seen in many major museums including the Corning Museum of GLass. the Victoria & Albert Museum. the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. the Museum of Fine Art in Houston and the collection of the Crafts Council.
